​About Whiting True Blue

Whiting True Blue chickens were developed in the United States through a selective breeding program focused on producing productive hens that lay naturally blue eggs. The line was developed by poultry geneticist Dr. Tom Whiting and has become known for combining blue egg colour with good laying ability and hardy, active birds.

Whiting True Blues can vary in appearance, with different feather colours and patterns occurring within the line. Their defining characteristic is the blue egg they produce.

Why We Chose Whiting True Blue for Our Blue Egg Genetics

At Roslin Poultry Ranch, we chose Whiting True Blues as an important part of our breeding program because of the combination of qualities they bring to our blue egg genetics. They naturally lay blue eggs, come in a wide variety of feather colours and patterns, and tend to come into lay earlier than many other blue-egg-laying breeds.

Egg production is another advantage. Whiting True Blues are known for their productivity, with some sources reporting approximately 250–300 eggs per hen annually under good laying conditions. By comparison, Ameraucanas are often estimated to produce around 180–250 eggs per year, depending on the strain. Actual production varies with genetics, age, nutrition, daylight and management.

Their earlier maturity and productive laying ability are also appealing to backyard chicken keepers who want to start collecting blue eggs sooner. Whiting True Blues offer an attractive combination of blue egg colour, laying potential and diverse feather patterns.

For us, Whiting True Blues are more than simply a blue-egg-laying breed. They are an important part of the genetics we use to develop and maintain the range of blue, green and specialty egg colours found throughout our breeding program.
