🌱 About Our Started Pullets
At Roslin Poultry Ranch, we raise a limited number of started pullets each season for customers who prefer young, healthy, well-started birds—without the challenges of brooding day-old chicks or incubating hatching eggs.
Because we intentionally keep our grow-out space small, availability is seasonal and limited. This allows us to give each bird
the proper care, space, and attention they deserve.

🐣 What Is a Started Pullet?
A started pullet is a young female chicken that has been raised beyond the day-old chick and brooding stage.
At approximately 8 weeks old, our pullets are large enough to be integrated into an existing flock, making them a convenient option for chicken keepers who want to add young birds without starting with day-old chicks.

📅 How Our Started Pullet Program Works
Our started pullets are raised in small batches throughout the season.
Because each hatch can produce a different combination of female breeds and specialty breeding lines, breed availability will vary from batch to batch.
We do not take pre-orders or reservations for individual birds.
Instead, pullets are posted on our Started Pullet Availability Page when they reach approximately 8 weeks old.

Because availability is limited, we recommend having a few preferred breeds or specialty lines in mind rather than waiting for one specific breed.
🐔 Purebred Breeds
Our purebred started pullets come from carefully selected breeding stock and are raised with the same attention to health, temperament and quality that goes into our entire breeding program. At approximately 8 weeks old, these well-started young hens are ready to transition to their new homes and become a beautiful addition to your flock. Choose from our established purebred breeds, each with its own unique characteristics and egg colour.

Our specialty started pullets come from unique hybrid breeding lines developed here at Roslin Poultry Ranch. Each line combines carefully selected genetics to create distinctive characteristics, feather colours and egg colours. Because these are specialty breeding lines, feather colour and pattern can vary from bird to bird, making each pullet unique. Raised to approximately 8 weeks old, these well-started young hens offer a unique option for adding something different to your flock.

🐔 Coastal Eggers
Coastal Eggers are a developing specialty breeding line selected for soft, pastel-toned blue and green eggs. Each generation is carefully selected to continue developing the colour range and characteristics we're working toward.
Egg Colour: Pastel shades of blue, green and blue-green
Temperament: Hardy and active
Good to know: Prolific layers of soft blue and green-toned eggs
🐔Rustic Eggers
Rustic Eggers are a developing specialty breeding line selected for deeper, earthy egg colours, with an emphasis on rich olive and brown tones. Each generation is carefully selected to continue developing the characteristics and egg colours we're working toward.
Egg Colour: Olive, dark olive, khaki, moss green and brown shades
Temperament: Hardy and active
Good to know: Prolific layers producing a range of rich, earthy olive and brown tones
🐔Mosaic Eggers™✨ — NEW FOR 2027
Mosaic Eggers are a multigenerational specialty breeding project created here at Roslin Poultry Ranch. This developing line brings together carefully selected genetics from multiple breeding lines, with an emphasis on exploring unique combinations of feather colour and egg colour. Each generation will be evaluated and selectively bred to continue developing the line.
Egg Colour: Potential for a beautiful range of green, olive and brown shades, with some hens having the potential to lay naturally speckled eggs. Egg colour and speckling can vary from hen to hen as this developing line continues to be selected.
Temperament: Hardy and active
Good to know: New for 2027! This is an evolving breeding project, and each generation will be selected to continue developing the characteristics and egg colours we're working toward.
Whiting True Blue — Barred Specialty Pullets
Our Barred WTB Specialty Pullets come from our dedicated Barred WTB breeding group, maintained separately from our regular Whiting True Blue breeding group.
These pullets are an exciting option for breeders interested in working with barring genetics and developing future sex-linked crosses. At 8 weeks old, the birds are already sexed, allowing breeders to add known female Barred WTB genetics to their breeding program.
Barring is a genetic trait and its inheritance and expression can vary, so these pullets are offered as a breeding opportunity rather than a guarantee of a particular outcome in future crosses.

SPECIALTY BREED -Barred Whiting True Blue pullets are offered as a breeding tool for customers interested in creating sex-linked offspring when bred to an appropriate gold-feather-based rooster. They also retain the blue-egg genetics associated with the Whiting True Blue line.

🌿 What's New for 2027?
We are continuing to develop our breeding lines for the 2027 season.
🍫 Copper Marans
For 2027, our Copper Marans will include Blue, Black and Splash birds.
We also introduced a new Blue Copper Marans rooster from French Copper Marans stock, selected with the breed standard in mind. (SOP)
🌿 2027 Rustic Egger Feature
🫒 Our Goal: Deeper Olive Eggs
For the 2027 season, we're continuing to develop our Rustic Egger line with another backcross to our new Blue French Copper Marans rooster.
Our goal is to produce deeper, richer olive egg colours in the next generation.
🥚 Anticipated Egg Colour
The photo below shows an example of the darker olive egg colour one of our pullets produced from our 2026 Rustic Egger line. Rustic Eggers have a 50/50 chance of laying a darker olive or darker brown shade.
Actual egg colour will vary from hen to hen, and the colour shown is an anticipated result rather than a guarantee.
🧩 Mosaic Eggers™ — New for 2027
Mosaic Eggers are one of our newest specialty breeding projects at Roslin Poultry Ranch.
The name Mosaic reflects how this line is being developed — by bringing together carefully selected genetics from multiple breeding lines, with each generation adding another piece to the bigger picture.
This is a multigenerational breeding project, with the goal of developing a unique line with interesting combinations of feather colour, egg colour and breeding traits. As the project progresses, we will continue evaluating each generation and selectively breeding the birds that best fit the direction of the line.
Our first Mosaic Egger started pullets will be available in 2027 in limited numbers as we continue developing this exciting new line.

Availability is limited and all pullets are sold first come, first served.
Looking for a Ready-to-Lay Pullet?
We do not offer ready-to-lay pullets as a regular offering because our space is limited.
From time to time, we do have mature hens retired, generally 2-3 years of age, from our breeding program available for new homes. These hens are typically offered in July and August, when we are making room for younger breeding stock. Availability is very limited and varies from year to year.
