Do You Use Sand for Litter? If so, you need to check out this handy tool!

Updated: Feb 25

We recently acquired this tool because we use sand for litter. After a season of walking on it, particularly near the doors, around the drinker and feeder, or in high-traffic areas, it begins to compact over time, making it more difficult to scoop the droppings.

Previously, we used a hand shovel to loosen the compacted areas, but as we find tools that make the task easier and more efficient, we're all for it.

We were so impressed with this tool that we felt it deserved its own blog post.

The battery that we ordered with the cordless tiller was impressive also with the long lasting charge that it came with.

We have two chicken coops and runs, The one chicken run is 16x16 and our second chicken run is 14x8. we were able to do both chicken runs with the battery before it died out.

After tilling and fluffing up the sand it smelled of fresh soil and looked like the day we put the sand in the runs, not to mention the chickens love it all fluffed up for dust bathing.

If you winterize your run with contractors plastic, I would definitely suggest using this tool before you put the plastic up as it was a bit dusty, so you would need some airflow while using it.

We will use this tiller again in the spring to loosen and freshen up the sand, after I remove the plastic from winter.

It was a really great investment and so much less labor intensive than a shovel.
